Ah, winter in Michigan, it always seems to last at least 287 days. When the wind chill is approximately “why do I live here,” it’s not just people who feel the freeze. Your Truestream equipment does, too!
Recently, we’ve seen several service calls where members reported “no internet”, and the root cause turned out to be the cold. Specifically, the Truestream modem and router was located in an underheated area and had dipped below its operating temperature.
Why this matters
The Truestream equipment, like most electronics, needs to stay between 32°F – 104°F
Below 32°, it may shut down or flash a red, blinking power light, indicating it cannot operate properly due to the extreme conditions.
What to check if your internet goes out in the cold:
Verify that the Truestream equipment is located in a heated, conditioned space. Unheated or underheated basements, garages, sheds, and crawlspaces can get dangerously cold.
If it’s cold where the equipment is located, warm the area to at least 32°F.
Give it about an hour at that temperature. If the equipment thaws out but service doesn’t come back online, give us a call at 1-888-485-2537.
The bottom line
If your modem and router are shivering, your internet will be too. Keeping the equipment indoors, or at least in a temperature-controlled space to help prevent damage and outages during those Michigan deep freezes.
